Dublin City Council Monthly Council Meeting 13/12/2017 item 27

Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Freedom of the City of Dublin in 2000 for her work in support of democracy over many decades in Burma, now Myanmar.

At a council meeting in 2017, this honour was rescinded by a majority of council members, in light of the overwhelming evidence of Suu Kyi being implicated in the repression and denial of rights of the Rohingya community in her country.

For more, take a look at the meeting documents, the proposals and responses from the Dublin City Council session.
