Nina Cried Power

“…It’s not the song, it is the singin’
It’s the heaven of the human spirit ringin’…

…Power has been cried by those stronger than me
Straight into the face that tells you to rattle your chains
If you love bein’ free…”

Released in 2018, the hit “Nina Cried Power” by musician Hozier from Bray, Co. Wicklow, and featuring singer and civil rights activist Mavis Staples, is a tribute to the “spirit and legacy of protest”.

Hozier was inspired to write the song through the human and civil rights work of musical legends such as Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Bob Dylan, Woody Gutherie, Mavis Staples, who challenge inequality, ‘un-freedom’ and denial of rights within our societies. The video that accompanies the song features a collection of 20 human rights activists and artists working on a diversity of human rights challenges.
