Female solidarity through music. Women on Wednesdays (WOW) was a collaborative initiative launched in 2017 between Aidlink and Born Optimistic that aimed to provide a platform for female artistry whilst raising funds for Aidlink’s Girls’ Education Programme in Kenya.
WOW was prompted by the poor representation of women on stage at festivals – in 2017 only 25% of acts at Longitude were female and women only made up one third of the line-up at Electric Picnic. This is reflective of the underrepresentation of women in many walks of life.
The event was unique in its focus and shone the spotlight on female Irish artists, musicians and comedians as they joined together in global female solidarity.
Aidlink is committed to connecting communities in Ireland and Africa. Aidlink is a female led organisation that has been working with our Kenyan partners the Girl Child Network to ensure that children, especially girls, have access to improved education and a better outlook for their future.
