World Survival – The Third World Struggle

World Survival: The Third World Struggle is Ireland’s first private education company publication (The O’Brien Press) relating to development education.

It was authored by one of Ireland’s first full-time development education officers, Gráinne O’Flynn, based in the Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) in Dublin. The ‘Development Education Project’ was initiated by a joint committee of the Irish Commission for Justice and Peace and the Irish Council of Churches in January 1980, and was financed by the bilateral aid section of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Many of the key aspects of World Survival, such as political cartoons, strong photos, customised graphics from international reports and key ideas from the debate on world issues such as women and work, energy, colonialism, access to clean water and baby formula etc., which has arguably made it the prototype for education resources ever since.
