Activities
(Note: Teachers must be aware of possible sensitive personal issues and should focus on immunisation.)
Activity DP 1
Students examine the pattern and linkage between T.B. and poverty. Students read article on Dr. Noel Browne and discuss his experiences of poverty and T.B. in Ireland in the 1950’s. Question students on their impressions of Ireland in the 1950’s compared with modern Ireland.
Activity DP 2
Students obtain information about TB online and connect the prevalence of TB with poverty throughout the world. Useful websites include www.WHO.org, www.action.org etc
Students complete Quiz on P7 of Cause and Effect on HIV and AIDS to test existing knowledge on the subject. Any misconceptions are dealt with on completion of the quiz.
Activity DP 3
Students learn about the history of HIV/AIDS using the following articles. In pairs, students skim read the information and write down key information to relay back to the group.
Activity DP 4
Students watch the H.I.V Animation Series to understand H.I.V transmission, risky activities that help transmission, protection against transmission and the use of anti retrovirals (ARVs). Students respond to their impressions of the disease and debate the portrayal of the disease.
Activity DP5
Using the Concern booklet Cause and Effect – 4 HIV stories P 10-16, students learn more about HIV and Aids and learn about HIV/AIDS Testing
Students watch the short clip of the affect of ARV drugs on a HIV Patient
Emphasis should be placed on the great impact ARV’s have on human health in a short time frame.
Activity DP 6
Students research and examine the causes and impact of H.I.V in Africa by analysing the information on page 182 of 80:20. (Could this be hyperlinked?)
Students design public awareness posters for their school, especially around World A.I.D.S Day – (December 1st). Information can be taken from UN AIDS Factsheet.
Activity DP 7
In an effort to develop empathy with people living with H.I.V, students engage in the Stigma exercise. P. 24
Activity DP 8
Students research other diseases of poverty such as malaria, dengue, dysentery, typhoid, cholera and ebola by using the internet and present a fact file on their chosen topic of research under the following headings; Causes, transmission, prevention and treatment.
