Dr Brighid Golden is Assistant Professor in Global Citizenship Education at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, working and teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate courses aimed at pre-service and practicing teachers. She is also a member of the DICE Network. Brighid teaches, researches, and publishes in the areas of global citizenship education, critical thinking, resource development, initial teacher education, and self-study research approaches.
On the 30th of January, she will be launching her latest book, Critical Thinking for Global Citizenship Education: A Conceptual Framework, which is a two-part conceptual framework for critical global learning which weaves together theory and practice. While the book is rooted in literature and research, the book is personal and reflexive, allowing readers the space to reflect on their own practice. It offers
- a practical, research-informed approach to teaching critical thinking within global citizenship education.
- supports readers in developing their own knowledge around critical thinking to inform their approach to teaching, and;
- includes examples of guidelines and suggested teaching methodologies.

Curious Teachers, Critical Classrooms was also written by Brighid and is a text book for everything you need to know to teach GCE in primary schools. It’s accessible approach to the subject matter makes it an essential for the primary teacher’s GCE toolkit.
To compliment the book, Curious and Critical GCE is a podcast series hosted by the author herself, Dr Brighid Golden. To date there have been 11 episodes in which Brighid talks to educators of their experiences implementing GCE in their different education settings. The podcast series is for students, teachers and anyone who is interested in GCE.
It is accessible through podcast platforms and the Mary Immaculate College website also.
Brighid has also contributed to developmenteducation.ie in the form of a teaching unit on empathy. Empathy – Who Cares Anyway? was developed to support teachers and students in learning about and critically engaging with the concept of empathy but, more specifically, selective empathy. The teaching unit explores the concepts of empathy, selective empathy and sympathy, exploring questions such as where these concepts exist in every day life, how they affect us and how we can all work to bring more empathy in our lives while exploring ideas around critical thinking also.
In an increasingly polarised world where conflict is abundant and compassion is sparse, connecting to and understanding one another is needed now more than ever.
