This is a collaborative report between the Lokniti programme of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. It analyses the growth of online social networking sites and apps in India and their role in shaping political preferences and attitudes in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The findings of the report show a strong link between social media usage and political participation.

The report highlights the key trends and patterns noticed in the usage of social media platforms in India during the last five years. It is divided into four sections:

- Section 2: the issue of smartphone ownership being unequal and looks at whether this has resulted in the social media space also being unequal.
- Section 3: the role of social media as an influencer by looking at the awareness levels of social media users about recent happenings, their attitudes and opinions regarding the minority communities and their trust levels in the information accessed on social media.
- Section 4: the issue of social media usage and vote choice in the context of the recently concluded Lok Sabha election.
